Global Energiesprong Alliance explained
To ensure that we can future proof our lives today, we need to change how we live, what we eat, what we buy, how we move around and how we continue to develop ourselves in order to positively meet these challenges.
In the Global Energiesprong Alliance explained we focus on some of these challenges, and we translate them into the following programme streams:
- Boost the energy transition market for our homes, buildings and neighbourhoods into communities that no longer use fossil fuels.
- Push forward the development of energy positive materials when we build or renovate buildings.
- Inspire and facilitate those personal and business developments that make change possible.
- Push forward and map the right regulations and financing schemes needed to bring about change.
Our ambition is to push forward the development of energy positive materials, to inspire the personal and business development needed for change and to drive forward and map the right regulations and financing schemes needed for these changes.
The Energiesprong approach, that we are known for, is part of the Global Energiesprong Alliance. Through years of experience gained with the Energiesprong business model we’ve grown and evolved. We now want to provide more answers to those questions that go beyond energy transition, while remaining super active in, and supportive of, the Energiesprong approach that still fits perfectly into more than one our programme pillars.
What is an Energiesprong retrofit?
After an Energiesprong retrofit, a home is net zero energy, meaning it generates the total amount of energy required for its heating, hot water and electrical appliances. It also provides superior indoor comfort. This can be achieved by using new technologies such as prefabricated facades, insulated rooftops with solar panels, smart heating, and ventilation and cooling installations. A refurbishment comes with a long-year performance warranty on both the indoor climate and the energy performance for up to 40 years. A complete home makeover can be completed in less than 10 days, and some have been done in as little as a day!
How to pay for it?
In general, an Energiesprong renovation or new build is financed by future energy cost savings plus the budget for planned maintenance and repairs over the coming 30 years. This allows residents to keep the same cost of living. In the case of housing associations, tenants pay the housing association an energy service plan which is the equivalent of their previous energy supplier bill. The housing association can use this new income stream to partly fund the renovation works. Typically, legislation needs to be amended to allow such a conversion of the monthly energy bill into a monthly energy service fee for the housing association.
How do we work?
Independent Global Energiesprong Alliance market development teams work with regulators to tune policy and regulation, and with banks to create financial arrangements to make a viable path to scale. By creating these market contexts while simultaneously brokering initial pilot projects and, subsequently, large volume retrofit deals (1000’s), the momentum needed for stakeholders to act simultaneously is created. This entices suppliers to invest in off-site manufacturing of the components needed for such house makeovers. Mass customisation and industrialisation are key in getting to a new quality and cost standard.
Funding
Global Energiesprong Alliance attracts funding through several European projects supporting this international expansion: Transition Zero (H2020), E=0 (InterregNWE) and Mustbe0 (InterregNWE). Furthermore, teams in countries have acquired funding from national funds. Read more about these three projects. Finally, we are also very grateful that some philanthropic funders contribute to our cause and enable us to undertake the more speculative stages of development which often come prior to public funds are made available. A list of the international funders for the various initiatives are at the bottom of this webpage.
